Maybe it is more versatile because we are conditioned to learn it from the beginning. I believe the next generation of users will be more accustomed to interaction paradigms that do not involve using a mouse. In that sense it is bound to become obsolete.

I’ve never mentioned only touch is a better. However it is better to point to things directly rather than through an appendage which does not have direct relationship with the output.

Games are an exception, however the mouse can be thought of as a joystick in this case.
